RefugeeWorks Publishes
Youth Employment Manual

On Monday, January 7, RefugeeWorks, a program of LIRS, celebrated the release of its newest publication, "Refugee Youth Employment." The 80-page manual, published with a grant from the U.S. Office of Refugee Resettlement, seeks to address the employment needs of refugee youth by highlighting the best practices of a number of youth employment programs across the country.

"Refugee youth, as they make their way from adolescence to adulthood, often face career challenges without the support, direction or opportunities offered to their parents by our employment network," writes LIRS Director for RefugeeWorks Jane Bloom in the preface. She hopes that the manual will "spark program interest in refugee youth employment and catalyze targeted attention for this underserved population."

The manual is divided into two sections. Section I, Programs Targeting Refugee Youth, contains eight chapters: Career Development, Summer Employment, After School and Out-of-School Job Placement, Special At-Risk Populations, Career Pipeline, Entrepreneurial Models, Subsidized Community Service Employment, and Citywide and Statewide Initiatives. Section II, Mainstream Youth Program Linkages, contains two chapters: National Networks and Transferable Models. Each chapter includes descriptions of two or more programs that are creatively rising to the challenge of meeting the employment needs of refugee youth including career planning, training, and support for their future work lives.

To order a complimentary copy of the manual, contact LIRS Contract Manager for RefugeeWorks Karen Heist, kheist@refugeeworks. Additional copies are $2.75 each to cover postage and handling. To order, make checks payable to LIRS and mail to
