The Middle of Everywhere: The World's Refugees Come to Our Town by Dr. Mary Pipher recounts her interactions with refugee families in Lincoln, Neb. The compelling volume calls on Americans to serve newcomers as cultural brokers. The book's engaging stories would make it a useful tool for helping the general public learn more about refugees.

"Los Trabajadores/The Workers," a moving documentary video by Heather Courtney, illustrates the lives and labors of the migrant workers, many undocumented, who fuel the booming economy of Austin, Texas, and the loved ones who wait for their return in Mexico. The film recounts the formation by Austin day laborers of First Workers Inc., a center where they can gather and prospective employers can come to find the labor they need in an orderly and dignified manner. With little obvious bargaining power, the poor, mostly non-English speaking workers transform the hiring process and manage to negotiate an $8 per hour minimum wage. At first the idea of the site generates controversy, and the documentary gives balanced treatment to the arguments pro and con. For information on ordering the video, contact Heather Courtney, hcourtney85@hotmail.com, 512/371-1337.
