LIRS Advocacy Hits the Web
By Merrill Smith, LIRS Washington Representative

LIRS's revamped website is, among other things, a hotbed of refugee and immigration advocacy! From the home page, you can click on "Advocacy Issues" to view a menu of issues that we are working on right now: from the detention of asylum seekers to the plight of economic migrants, from children lost in the web of immigration proceedings to the struggle to end expedited removal. It's all about putting our mission to "welcome the stranger" into positive action to affect national policy.

Just click on any issue and you will find the tools you'll need to inform yourself and take effective action. There are background descriptions of the issue along with links to recent articles on the subject. We've got summaries of proposed legislation and even the full texts as well, in case you want to go over them with a fine-toothed comb. You'll find guides to who in Congress or the administration has special jurisdiction over the question and links to their websites.. There are up-to-date status reports on pending bills. Links are also provided to LIRS partners who are working for the same cause, and even some who oppose us. (Hey, you gotta know what the other side is saying!)

Finally, there are sample letters that you can easily download and personalize for that extra this-is-important-to-me impact that really get elected officials' attention. And some instructions on how you can take the next steps in advocacy: the follow-up phone call to the representative's office, linking up with others in your area to form coalitions, setting up a face-to-face meeting with an official to make your case and generating media coverage.

From any page, click on "Latest News" to read the most recent column "From the President's Desk," the latest "Washington Update" and LIRS news releases on other late-breaking issues. You can even take a walk down memory lane by exploring the archives from these pages to see how our advocacy campaigns have gone in the past.

So come pay us a visit and explore the possibilities. See how far you can go. Standing with the oppressed, speaking truth to power, changing the law…it's kind of fun, really.

Try it, you'll like it!
