Asylum and Immigration Grantees, 2008
LIRS is pleased to announce the 2008 Asylum and Immigration grant awards.
LIRS Asylum and Immigration grants support community–based programs that are serving and advocating for vulnerable immigrants such as those in immigration detention, asylum seekers, children, torture survivors, trafficking victims and immigrant victims of domestic violence.
In 2008 LIRS and the Presbyterian Church USA (PCUSA) jointly awarded $224,500 to 18 organizations.
These grantees reported the following activities last year:
- Provided 1,783 legal orientation programs to immigrant detainees, reaching approximately 27,065 adults and 1,033 children.
- Opened case files on almost 12,021 detained individuals and 11,048 non-detained immigrants.
- Served almost 1,356 children, including over 1,407 who were detained.
- Served over 674 survivors of torture, of whom over 356 were in immigration detention.
- Provided services to asylum seekers and other vulnerable immigrants from over 120 different countries.
