When asylum seekers and survivors of torture flee to the United States in search of protection, they are often imprisoned before they have the opportunity to make their case. Other migrants fleeing desperate circumstances suffer the same fate. Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Service helps migrants at risk by offering critical legal support that can make the difference between beginning a new life and being forced to live in persecution or despair.
We promote access to the justice system, immigration benefits and legal protection for all immigrants and refugees. Through our legal service networks we provide compassionate support in so many ways—serving as a witness and accompanying people on their journeys to safety and opportunity.

This year over 25,000 adults and children will receive our “Know Your Rights” presentations, which provide critical information about how to navigate the complicated U.S. immigration system.
Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Service engages in ongoing dialogue with the U.S. Departments of Justice and Homeland Security to strengthen our knowledge of immigration law and procedures, and we serve as a tireless advocate for asylum seekers, torture survivors and other migrants at risk.
