At Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Service, we believe strongly that families belong together. Through our work, we strive to bring and keep refugee and migrant families together after difficult and often heartbreaking separations.
A former refugee who wishes to bring her parent or sibling to the United States. A pastor whose immigrant wife cannot find her way through bureaucratic red tape. A U.S. citizen whose undocumented husband waits indefinitely in immigration detention far away from their family. We seek to change the laws and policies that tear them apart.
As individuals and families migrate to the United States or enter as refugees under trying circumstances, many turn to Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Service for our guidance and expertise in keeping their families together.

| How We Serve
In a joint 2007 report entitled Locking Up Family Values: The Detention of Immigrant Families, Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Service exposed the practice of detaining families in prisonlike settings and made recommendations for extensive reforms of the immigration detention system.
As a result of this report, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) reached a settlement in a lawsuit involving one of the detention centers highlighted in the report. Today this facility is no longer used to detain immigrant families.
Since we issued this landmark report, many first steps have been taken by our government to create a more humane immigration detention system. We continue to work for just and humane immigration reform that will keep families together.
Join our Stand for Welcome campaign to add your voice to our reform efforts.
