Thousands of children worldwide migrate to the United States each year without parents or other caregivers. When our federal government takes migrant children into custody, they call on Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Service to make recommendations as to the best interests of each child.
Our child welfare experts identify the individual needs and best options for each child and make sound, professional recommendations to the federal government for the child’s continued care or release.
Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Service’s highly qualified professionals work with government caseworkers and immigration officials, attorneys, care providers and, most importantly, the children themselves to ensure that every child’s voice is heard and needs are met.

Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Service serves the best interests of all refugee and immigrant children by monitoring federal legislation and policies to ensure the fair and just treatment of these vulnerable populations.
We engage in advocacy for immigrant and refugee children nationally with the U.S. Department of State, the Department of Homeland Security, the Department of Health and Human Services’ Office of Refugee Resettlement and the Department of Justice’s Executive Office for Immigration Review. Internationally we advocate with the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees.
