Portrait: The Wahieb Family

Mohannad Wahieb, his wife and their three daughters fled their home in Iraq when they started receiving death threats in 2004. A hardworking husband and father, Mohannad was targeted because he had helped U.S. aid organization distribute medical supplies to remote Iraqi villages.

Mohannad and his family lived in neighboring Jordan with other family members for four years, awaiting approvals and clearances that would allow them to find a permanent home in the United States.

Trinity Lutheran Church in Kissimmee, Florida, welcomed the Wahiebs with open arms in early 2009 when Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Service placed the family through Lutheran Services Florida.

Since their arrival, the Wahiebs have built a beautiful life in the United States. The girls are thriving in their new school. Their mother has gone back to finish her college degree. And Mohannad has recently taken a job with Lutheran Services Florida to welcome other newcomers reestablishing their lives in a new homeland.

Mohannad recently shared, “It has been my lifelong prayer to be able to help others…now God has given me this wonderful opportunity.”
