| Over the last 10 years Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Service has resettled thousands of Burmese refugees in welcoming communities throughout the United States. These refugees are children and adults who have escaped violent oppression in Burma to find new opportunity and hope in the United States.
One child, 16-year-old Cin Mung, showed his appreciation for his new home in the form of a letter. “I’m really glad to come here…I have more opportunity…I feel thankful,” it reads. Accompanying his words are two pictures, one of the United States flag, and the other of the Burmese flag. These symbols represent Cin’s new dual identity, shaped by the powerful experiences of flight and newfound freedom. Cin, along with his three siblings and parents, came to the United States in August 2008.

Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Service currently supports 104 immigrant children that were released from detention to family or other caregivers. LIRS child specialists ensure children that have been reunified continue to find safety and security in their new homes, integrate into their new community, and receive the services they need to be successful. Looking forward this year, LIRS hopes to serve a total of 165 children and their caregivers.
In 2010 Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Service found caring foster homes and placement for 223 children. This number reflects 121 refugee children arriving from overseas, 52 unaccompanied immigrant children, 19 victims of child trafficking, and 20 children who received status as Special Immigrant Juveniles amongst others.
