My Acts of Welcome

Welome starts with you.

Some of the most simple acts can make the biggest difference in the lives of newcomers and change the way you see the world. We invite you to try some of the easy ways listed here to learn, tell, and be the story of welcome.

Simple Words
Find out what languages are spoken by newcomers in your community. Choose at least one of those languages and learn three common words or phrases such as “Welcome” and “My name is....” and "Thank you."

Simple Cooking
Experience the home culture of a refugee by preparing a meal based on the cuisine of a country from which people have fled such as Burma, Sudan or Iraq.

Simple Respect
Become aware of the language you use about newcomers. For instance, using the more accurate term "undocumented" rather than "illegal" will create more positive conversations.

Simple Story
Write a story of welcome, you could reflect on your ideas of welcome and the welcome you have received in your life or even interview a newcomer in your area to hear about their experiences.

Simple Reading
Read a book written by, or about, an immigrant or former refugee. Share with others what you learn.
