A Gift of International Friendship
The statue, "Liberty Enlightening the World," was a gift of friendship
from the people of France to the people of the U.S. in 1886. It
commemorates the 100th anniversary of American independence and
French support for it.
A Symbol of Human Liberty
Sculptor Frederic-Auguste Bartholdi intended the statue to be a
symbol of human liberty. It was certainly that for millions of immigrants
who were part of a mass migration of humanity in the late 19th and
early 20th centuries.
Located at the entrance to New York harbor, Lady Liberty was the
first sight for approximately 12 million steerage and third class
steamship passengers who entered the port of New York between 1892
and 1954. Immigrants were legally and medically inspected at nearby
Ellis Island, now a museum dedicated to the history of immigration.
A Monument to Political
Freedom
Today the Statue of Liberty still inspires people all over the world.
Chinese students at Tianammen Square made a model of the statue
to symbolize their revolution.
