The Honorable Zoe Lofgren
U.S. House of Representatives
1401 Longworth House Office Building
Washington, D.C. 20515

Dear Representative Lofgren:

On behalf of Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Service (LIRS), the national organization founded by the Lutheran churches in the United States to serve uprooted people, I thank you for introducing H.R. 3119, the Protecting American Families and Businesses Act of 2011. The bill would streamline the legal channels available for immigrants to come to the United States to work and reunite with close family members.

Following World War II one out of every six Lutherans in the world was displaced. With the participation of 6,000 congregations, Lutherans in the United States opened their homes, churches and communities to assist tens of thousands of migrants and their families. Lutherans have continued this ministry and every day bear witness to how our society is strengthened and renewed by the contributions of migrant families.

The United States prides itself on being a nation that supports family values, yet the legal immigration system forces families to wait too long to be together. The Protecting American Families and Businesses Act affirms the importance of family unity by expediting reunification processes for those separated by our immigration system.

LIRS appreciates your tremendous leadership on a wide array of immigration and refugee issues and we look forward to continuing to work with you to build support for this important bill. Please contact Eric B. Sigmon, Director for Advocacy, at (202) 626-7943 or via email at esigmon@lirs.org with any additional questions.

Yours in faith,

Linda Hartke
