BALTIMORE, MD — In response to the growing practice of inhumane family detention, Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Service (LIRS) and the Southwestern Texas Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) will hold an interfaith prayer vigil on Monday, October 20, 2014 at 11am CST at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, 408 S. Davidson Street, Karnes City, TX. The vigil is intended to raise awareness and lift voices in opposition to the inhumane practice of incarcerating migrant children and families at facilities such as the Karnes County Residential Center in Karnes City.
All are welcome to join the vigil and pray for the mothers and children who have fled violence and abuse in Central America and are currently being housed at the detention center in Karnes City. Following the prayer vigil at St. Paul’s, participants will proceed to the grounds of the Karnes detention facility for
an open air vigil.
Bishop Ray Tiemann of the Southwestern Texas Synod of the ELCA will preside over the vigil. Representatives from the Texas-Louisiana Gulf Coast Synod of the ELCA and Refugee Services of Texas will also participate.
The vigil is open to the public and the media. Lunch will be served. For additional information, contact Folabi Olagbaju, National Grassroots Director, LIRS at 202-626-7931.
