BALTIMORE, MD – Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Service (LIRS) is very excited to announce the launch of a new publication, First Steps: A Guide for Refugees, Asylum Seekers, and Migrants Released from Detention.

Developed by LIRS’ Access to Justice program, this publication is a “how-to”, step-by-step guide to assist refugees, asylum seekers and migrants released from detention navigate the complex system of laws, agencies, and public and private systems they must master. It provides important information on legal rights, responsibilities, and eligibility for services and benefits such as healthcare and education, according to immigration status. The main guide is recommended for use by lawyers, case managers, church partners, or other service providers to aid clients in understanding the complex system of rights and benefits available to them and empower clients to access their rights; as well as for use by migrants themselves.

Status specific supplements are also available for asylum seekers and lawful permanent residents are intended for migrant populations to use themselves. They are shorter and filled with the most critical information for migrants according to status, and relate back to the main guide.
