Be an Advocate is one of four modules in LIRS’s Be Not Afraid project. The project is a set of tools designed to assist congregations serving immigrants as they seek to reduce fear and create welcoming communities through education and advocacy. The tools in the Be an Advocate module help congregations speak up for fair and humane immigration policies and mobilize others to advocate, as well.
You can promote immigration advocacy within your community or congregation through simple acts like these:
Be in the Know
The first step to successful advocacy is to have accurate and up-to-date information. Counter misinformation with common sense facts, accurate statistics and practical solutions. Be in the know with the LIRS Action Center.
Be a Leader
Plan an immigration awareness event such as one of these:
- Invite an immigrant to share their story at a church or community event;
- Use the Be Not Afraid three-part Bible Study to spark a discussion about immigration advocacy;
- Hold a Prayer Vigil.
Form an immigration taskforce:
- Make a difference in your congregation or community by forming a taskforce, coalition or other type of group for education, advocacy or human care.
- Keep each other informed and encouraged.
- Share responsibilities for sustainable efforts.
- Network with other local, regional and national groups.
