Crossing the Line: An Inside Look at the Family Separation Crisis

Published On: Donate

Last week LIRS hosted a webinar, bringing together community leaders, policy experts, and service partners from across the country to discuss the family separation crisis and answer questions from our supporters.

The webinar featured a number of noteworthy speakers — Abel Nunez (CARECEN), Claudia Munoz (Grassroots Leadership), and Cory Shindel (KIND) — and offered key updates on legislation, action items, and the situation on the ground.

For those of you who missed it, you can access a recording of the webinar here— just enter your name and email address to receive your copy.

It was clear from the webinar that many of you are impassioned by the inhumane policies that are being implemented at the border, and we urge you to channel this outrage into actions that will support the children and families at risk.

There are three key actions you can take to make a difference today:

  1. Call on Congress: Pick up your phone and leverage your voice as a constituent. Use the scripts and sample resources in our toolkit as a guide.
  2. Support our Work: Everything we do, from our advocacy on the hill to our work in the field, is made possible by supporters like you. Make a gift today.
  3. Educate Yourself and Others: Equip yourself with the information you’ll need to effectively advocate for the cause. You can start with these FAQs.

Be sure to check out our brand new Crossing the Line Toolkit and review the slides from yesterday’s webinar as you outline your action plan. We also encourage you to check out the ELCA’s AMMPARO initiative, which provides a wide range of opportunities for legal (and other) professionals to help out along with opportunities for congregations to offer support to migrant children.

Finally, please keep in mind that new information about the situation at the border is coming in constantly from our legislative and programmatic experts. Be sure to follow us on Facebook and Twitter to stay up-to-date on the latest from our partners and advocates.
