While many have expressed strong disappointment at the impasse on immigration reform by the inaction of House Republicans, advocates around the country remain undaunted and are preparing to embark on a national bus tour in support of compassionate and humane immigration reform.
Fast for Families made national headlines as 2013 came to a close when DREAMers and reform advocates participated in a month-long fast “to underscore the moral crisis caused by our country’s broken immigration system.”
Starting next week, Fasters will embark on the next phase of their campaign. Fast for Families Across America will be visiting over 100 key Congressional districts to hold events in support of immigration reform. LIRS calls on Lutherans along the tour stops to support phase two of the Fast for Families Across America tour, which will run from February 24 – April 9.
This exciting initiative will be an opportunity for immigration advocates throughout the nation to organize in collaboration with others, both in the faith and migrant communities, to show support for compassionate immigration reform. Fast for Families Across America will include two bus tours with plans to stop in the following states and end in Washington, D.C.:
Northern Tour: CA, NV, OR, WA, ID, UT, CO, MN, WI, IL, MI, IN, OH, PA, NY, MA, NJ
Southern Tour: CA, NV, AZ, NM, TX, OK, AR, LA, AL, FL, GA, SC, NC, WV, VA
As the Fast for Families Across America tour makes its way to your region, we are hoping you will help organize local events like as those listed below:
- Hold a local fast when the tour comes to town.
- Lead a delegation to meet your Congressional Representative and urge them to support compassionate immigration reform that meets LIRS Principles.
- Host a community meeting in your local church with Fast for Families fasters to share in prayer, testimony and action.
