Now that Thanksgiving is over and leftovers fill the fridge, the season of gift hunting is upon us. As I look for presents for my friends and family, I find it important to keep in mind those who have less than I do.
Today is #GivingTuesday, when families, businesses, charities, and students come together to give back. Giving a bit today can make a lasting change in the life of a newly arrived refugee. When refugees first arrive here in the United States, often after years in refugee camps, they are starting their lives anew. However, many come here with small amounts of cash and are overwhelmed with the idea of raising and protecting their families on $50. From dish soap to a baby crib, they need many things in order to rebuild their lives with dignity. LIRS works hard to ensure that they have all the necessities, but it takes a lot!
That’s why we have created a Rebuilding Hope Gift Catalog, filled with carefully selected gifts that we might take for granted, but which are essential in rebuilding the lives of refugees. As one refugee told us, “On the way to the United States, I was so worried, as a mother, to take care of my children. How would I fill a house for them when I have nothing? I cried to see beds and tables in our apartment.” When refugees first set foot in their new houses, it’s incredibly important that they see them as their new homes. These little gifts truly go a long way.
It doesn’t take much to make a big difference. With $1, you can give a toothbrush, and with $10, kitchen utensils. For a mother working to care for her family in her new country, that can go a long way! You can also use the catalog to give holiday gifts. If you give a gift in honor of a loved one, they’ll receive a card in the mail from us, letting them know.
You can access the gift catalog at LIRS.org/GiftCatalog and can call the toll-free number (877) 291-1061 to give. Thank you for thinking of newly arrived refugees this holiday season!
