The UNHCR has facilitated the return of the first group of Ivorian refugees who have opted for voluntary repatriation from Liberia where they sought safety during the bloody unrest that rocked Côte d’Ivoire after presidential elections last November. A convoy of 12 vehicles carrying 114 people left the Solo refugee camp in Liberia’s Grand Gedeh county on Friday headed for Côte d’Ivoire in the effort jointly organized by the UNHCR and the Liberian Refugee Repatriation and Resettlement Commission. A Sri Lankan man approved as a refugee has committed suicide in immigration detention in Sydney after waiting more than two years for a security clearance. Despite having received refugee status two months ago, the 27 year old still was not given a date for his release. He had reportedly attempted suicide before. [Australian Broadcasting Corporation]

Many Syrians have fled the brutal crack down on protests by  President Bashar Assad. For those who have made it into neighboring Turkey, many that were once thought to be safe are now growing more and more fearful of Syrian forces kidnapping them and taking them back to Syria, where they fear torture and death.
