As our nation celebrated Independence Day this past week, New Americans all over the country swore their allegiance to the United States and became our newest citizens. While immigration reform still has a very rocky road to completion, it is heartening to know that our country is continuing to grow stronger by welcoming new immigrants into its fold. In this week’s Top Picks, I would especially like to lift up Annaluisa Padilla’s post on immigration reform in the House, and Mary Giovagnoli’s piece on the civics test and the roadmap to citizenship.
- Treasure Ingels-Thompson, in her post “The Kind of American I Want to Be,” writes that on Independence Day, we should remember our country’s immigrant roots.
- America’s Voice, in its piece “Republicans and Independents in Key Swing Districts Want Congress to Pass Immigration Reform With a Pathway to Citizenship This Year,” explains a new poll by Public Policy Polling that provides further evidence that the GOP stands to lose much if it obstructs immigration reform.
- In her piece for Immigration Impact, “The Civics Lessons Many Undocumented Immigrants Have Already Learned,” Mary Giovagnoli observes that the widespread activism by undocumented immigrants makes it pretty clear that they understand the importance of the democratic process.
- Annaluisa Padilla, in her post for the American Immigration Lawyers Association, “The “H” in the House of Representatives,” calls on Congress to enact immigration reform that reflects the human side of this important issue.
