The Senate continued to debate S.744 this week, while the House saw the introduction of the badly misnamed “SAFE Act.” In this week’s edition of the Friday Top Picks, I would especially like to lift up responses to the SAFE Act by Colorlines and the National Council of La Raza.
- Brent Renison writes of the strong need for an increase in H-1B visas for graduates of U.S. universities in his piece for the American Immigration Lawyers Association, “U.S. Grads Deserve Better Than the Boot.”
- In his piece for Colorlines, “House GOP Finds Everything Wrong with Immigration Law, and Tries to Make it Worse,” Seth Freed Wessler tears apart the SAFE Act, calling it a “callous assault on immigrants.”
- Responding to a new report from the Congressional Budget Office that shows how immigration reform could reduce the deficit by $197 billion over 10 years, America’s Voice’s Frank Sharry declares “immigrants are and will continue to be productive contributors to our economy and society — not a drain, but a gain for our nation.”
- “Is a Bill Like 1070 the Best the House Can Do?” asks the National Council of La Raza in a post on how the SAFE Act would make America anything but safe.
- Vicki Guabeca writes for the ACLU that a “Study of Migrants Shows Abuse on Both Sides of U.S.-Mexico Border.”
Please email me or comment if you have any thoughts about this week’s Top Picks. Thank you for taking the time to visit our blog, and I look forward to bringing you the best online commentary on immigration and refugee issues.
