Migrants who come to our borders are often asylum-seekers or other vulnerable individuals. LIRS advocates on behalf of migrant and asylum-seeking men, women, and families impacted by immigration enforcement. We believe a person should never be locked up simply because of his or her immigration status. Instead, LIRS promotes access to due process and champions cost-saving alternatives to detention programs that prevent family separation and guarantee compliance with immigration officials.
Pastors, social service providers, Lutherans, and others have joined our visitation ministry, committing to regularly visit with or write to individuals isolated in immigration detention, and to provide friendship, compassion, and a listening ear.

LIRS has been a national leader in advocating for the reform of the U.S. immigration detention system and implementing humane and cost-effective alternatives to detention which utilize not-for-profit, community-based social service organizations.
LIRS has supported legal-service organizations in hubs across the United States that work to identify torture survivors lost in the immigration detention system and offer critical information, legal representation, and holistic services to protect torture survivors from removal and to promote healing.
