LIRS stands for welcome in many different ways. One of the projects I’d like you to know more about is Higher. Higher builds and connects the diverse community of employment professionals, employers and neighbors who support refugee and immigrant self-sufficiency through employment. Every other week, I’ll share some of the best content from Higher’s blog.
NY Times Magazine on Refugee Life in the United States
In the din of holiday celebrations, many of you may have missed this great 12/04/13 feature in the NY Times Magazine about the journey of a Sudanese refugee in Clarkston, Georgia.
A Lost Boy Grows Up, by Kevin Sack, a reporter and refugee mentor, does a great job of capturing employment, career advancement and the long term adjustment and learning curve refugees achieve as they succeed in the U.S. workforce.
The link also includes a great documentary film about Jacob Mach, the Sudanese refugee featured in the article.
Check back on alternate Wednesdays for more of the best of the Higher blog!
