Records Broken for LIRS Action Center — National Action Alert Update

Published On: Donate

In our National Action Alert yesterday, we urged LIRS supporters to take action for robust funding to serve refugees and unaccompanied migrant children. I’d like to share an update from Brittney Nystrom, LIRS Director for Advocacy, on the record-breaking actions so many of you took.

Nystrom writes:

LIRS supporters sprang into action and sent hundreds of email messages to Capitol Hill, breaking records for the LIRS Action Center. Many of you also took time out of your day to make phone calls to your elected officials. We are so grateful for your swift action!

I’m pleased to share that late Monday night, Congress unveiled a proposed bill to fund the federal government, H.R. 3547, for the remainder of this fiscal year that includes a major increase of nearly $500 million in funding for the Department of Health and Human Services’ Office of Refugee Resettlement. Though the amount still falls short of the current estimated needs, this is welcome and significant news! It is a testament to the work of people like you that this increase was included and vulnerable refugees and migrants will not be forgotten!

Our work is not yet finished. Congress must still vote to pass this bill into law. The new deadline for Congress to enact funding for the federal government is January 18. Please continue to urge your elected officials to support funding that makes protection and integration of refugees, unaccompanied children and other vulnerable migrants possible.
