As lawmakers spend this week at home on recess, advocates and Congressional staffers are gearing up for a series of hearings that will begin in the Senate Judiciary Committee on May 9th.
During hearings that will span the month of May, a number of amendments will be proposed to S. 744, the Border Security, Economic Opportunity, and Immigration Modernization Act. Because these amendments will make changes to the original “Gang of Eight” bill, it’s crucial that constituents weigh in with members of the Senate Judiciary Committee to ensure immigration reforms remain just and humane.
I encourage you to stay tuned this week to a special blog series outlining how LIRS’s key priorities for comprehensive immigration reform are treated in the Senate bill. Specialized posts will focus on family unity, refugees, humane enforcement, the roadmap to citizenship, and provisions for workers, and will be accompanied by fact sheets on the content of S. 744.
As we continue to raise our voices in support of compassionate immigration reform, I urge you to visit our Action Center and ask your members of Congress to stand for welcoming policies for migrants and refugees.
