I was resettled to VA in 2014 as a refugee with my three minor daughters. Since that time, my husband has been waiting in Jordan in immigration limbo, hoping to reunite with us in the U.S.
Managing as a single mom has been my biggest challenge to starting a new life in the US, but I have worked hard to achieve personal and professional success as a woman, just as I did back in home country.
Originally from Iraq, I have a Bachelor and Master degree in Nursing from Baghdad University where I practiced nursing for over 10 years and was a Lecturer and Clinical Instructor at Baghdad University, College of Nursing and at the Technical Medical Institute in Baghdad.
Now as a Refugee Caseworker at YWCA Tulsa where I assist refugees with employment and social services, I use the same drive and passion for success to encourage my clients. My experience as a refugee allows me to be in their shoes, build trust, offer advice and emotional support, and guide my clients professionally with respect.
Knowing that the hardest times are behind me allows me to stay positive for myself and my family.
My dream has become true and I can try to be a positive example for newcomers.
