Hope For The Holidays

The holidays should be a magical, wondrous time for children.

But this year in America, hundreds of children and families will be spending the holiday behind bars — because they crossed the United States border seeking protection.

In addition to families in immigration detention, there are kids — as young as 9 — who made the desperate journey to America without their parents. While these children are now safely in the care of the LIRS network, our hearts break to think that many of them won’t get to spend this holiday with their families. But you can help us brighten their holiday!

Share A Meal

While you may not be able to visit children and families in detention, there are new Americans in almost every city who are looking to sink their roots into a community and belong.

This holiday, you can reach out to one of your new neighbors and invite them to share a meal with you. There’s no better way to get to know someone than to sit down over a hot meal, and LIRS’s Breaking Bread & Building Bridges toolkit makes it easy for you to get started.

Why not make it a new tradition?

“Those who lived in a land of deep darkness - on them Light has shined.”

Isaiah 9:2

“The dawn from on high will break upon us, to give light to those who sit in darkness.”

Luke 1:78

Send a Message of Hope

Every year, individuals from across the country participate in Hope for the Holidays to send warm holiday wishes to children and families in detention.

Some participants hold card-making sessions at their kitchen tables. Others come together as congregations, or in community groups, to make and sign cards or write notes of encouragement in both English and Spanish.

Get inspired by browsing our gallery of cards from last year, or get started organizing your card-making event today! In order to ensure these get to the children by Christmas, we need all cards by Dec. 12.

Give a Gift

For a child spending this holiday in detention, imagine the joyful surprise it would be to discover there’s a gift waiting for them to open on Christmas morning. The thought of someone —  a stranger – who cares about them enough to send a gift into the darkness of detention… it reflects the spirit of Christmas and offers a hope that they are not alone.

Each year, LIRS is able to make this possible for hundreds of kids because of compassionate people like you. With your donation, LIRS will purchase gifts for children of all ages and deliver them, along with the cards, to the three family detention centers and a select group of children in our foster care network.

Give a gift now to help us make this Christmas a little bit brighter for the kids we serve.

“For a child has been born for us, a son given to us.”
