Texas Mobilizes for Comprehensive Immigration Reform — State Action Alert

button_icon_state_alertI’m excited that a vibrant movement to support comprehensive immigration reform is building in Texas, where LIRS will be boosting grassroots mobilization efforts in weeks to come.

True to the saying that everything is big in Texas, a high-profile coalition of Texas business, faith, and law enforcement leaders recently announced a Texas Compact,” a core set of five principles the signatories believe should guide the new immigration policy.

Among the endorsed principles are family unity and a path towards legal status for those who qualify and who ultimately wish to become permanent residents.  The signatories hope that the Compact will influence their members of Congress to work together for a reasonable, bipartisan immigration policy.  The Compact follows earlier ones in Utah, Iowa, and Colorado that garnered much support from conservatives, businesses, political and religious leaders in those states.

On a similarly upbeat note, AJC, the Global Jewish Advocacy today organized an Immigration Summit 2.0 with Members of Congress from the Greater Houston area to generate a wide range of ideas aimed at moving the community forward on comprehensive immigration reform.

It’s very encouraging and truly exciting that this much activity is going on in Texas, a state that will be critical to the passage of humane comprehensive immigration reform.  In the coming days and months, LIRS will be ratcheting up its grassroots efforts on comprehensive immigration reform in five key states including Texas.  For more information on LIRS advocacy on CIR and to take action, please visit our website at https://www.lirs.org/act/issues/cir/
