In previous posts, I’ve written about the prospects for comprehensive immigration reform in 2013. Today is our chance to start making compassionate reform a reality. LIRS is teaming up with other faith-based organizations to host a national call-in day for immigration reform.
Today, January 22, advocates from many faith traditions are making calls in support of compassionate immigration reform. Senators are currently planning the reform bill, making this a critical moment to let them know what people of faith want to see in the legislation.
I invite you to participate by calling (866) 940-2439. You will be connected to your first senator and will be able to call back to connect with the other. Please call between 9 AM – 5 PM EST and remind your senators that people of faith want immigration laws that provide a pathway to citizenship for undocumented migrants and that prioritize family unity.
Below is a sample script that you can tailor to your personal message:
- Hi, my name is ___NAME___, from ___CITY, STATE___.
- May I please speak with the staff person who handles immigration issues?
- I urge the senator to support a common sense, humane immigration reform bill that prioritizes family unity and creates a pathway to citizenship for aspiring Americans who are currently undocumented.
- What is the senator doing to help enact immigration reform this year?
Be sure to pick up the phone and make these calls! I thank you for your participation and look forward to advocating with you today! Let us know how your calls go at dc@lirs.org.
