URGENT Action Alert — Calls Needed Today to Stop Harmful S.744 Amendment!

Immigration Reform 2013 call in jpegThe Senate voted yesterday to begin debate on S. 744, marking the beginning of what is likely to be a three-week process.

We’ve already begun hearing about a number of proposed amendments that would change the bill and have been working with partners such as the Interfaith Immigration Coalition, the Alliance for Citizenship, and the American Immigration Lawyers Association to analyze key amendments and their potential to improve or harm the bill.

We need your help to oppose Grassley 1195, an amendment that would delay people following the roadmap to citizenship. It would prevent undocumented immigrants from obtaining Registered Provisional Immigrants status until the Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security certifies to Congress it has maintained “effective control” over the entire southern border for six months. This amendment may be voted as early as noon today Wednesday, June 12.

Although the roadmap to citizenship in S. 744 is tough, long, and must be earned, it must be attainable to be effective.  This amendment would further drag out a process that already will take at least 13 years. The drafters of the bill worked long and hard to reach bipartisan agreement on the enforcement triggers in the bill, and Grassley 1195 undermines that hard-won bipartisan agreement.

Feel free to use this sample script:

I am from [City, State, Congregation], and I support immigration reform. As a person of faith, I urge the senator to vote “No” to Grassley Amendment #1195, which would significantly delay and undermine the roadmap to citizenship.

Thank you for speaking out today! We’ll be updating this blog frequently with opportunities for you to act for fair and humane policies, so stay tuned!
