Refugee youth are...

Creative, resilient, hard-working, adaptable, our future. But they face unique challenges in rebuilding their lives after overcoming so much adversity.

That is why Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Service has pioneered holistic programming specifically for vulnerable refugee youth to put them on a pathway to a successful education and career.

The Abdullah Family's Pathway to success

Empowering refugee youth for a better tomorrow

The Refugee Youth Career Pathways program provides refugee youth (ages 16-24) with the professional skills and opportunities needed to expand their access to meaningful employment. Our service network currently delivers this vital support in nine states across the country, with additional locations on the horizon.

Each refugee youth begins the program by completing an individualized career development audit to assess employment and mentoring needs, professional goals, skills gaps and educational progress. A dedicated Career Navigator assists youth participants in creating a personalized action plan and helps them implement it, typically over the course of 6 to 12 months. The program also connects participants to skills training programs, English language instruction, professional mentors and access to internships and job opportunities.

Yohannes Habte - Career Navigator
Most programs are focused on the head of a refugee household. This is the only program dedicated to refugee youth between the age of 16 to 24, a critically important time in a young person's life.
Spencer Clark - Career Navigator
We strive to set tangible goals that will allow the young people we serve to build confidence and skills as they pursue a meaningful education and career.
Krish O'Mara Vignarajah - LIRS President & CEO
We realize that there are incredibly talented refugee youth in our communities, who just need a gentle helping hand. Through this program, we can ensure they are on a pathway to success.
